Progress on Ports of Auckland agreement

Maritime Union of New Zealand media release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wednesday 12 November 2014

The Maritime Union of New Zealand says good progress has been made towards the settlement of a Collective Employment Agreement with Ports of Auckland Limited (POAL).

Maritime Union National President Garry Parsloe says a stop work meeting held this morning (Wednesday 12 November) of MUNZ members at the Ports of Auckland endorsed a proposal from the branch executive for a way forward, after a positive meeting with port management earlier this week.

Mr Parsloe says a number of outstanding issues had been resolved.

“The new offer from POAL is by far the best to date, and provides a platform for moving forward to a Collective Agreement.”

Bargaining will continue to achieve a new Collective Agreement for the stevedores and engineering staff at the Port.

Mr Parsloe says as a sign of good faith the Union has decided to withdraw proceedings alleging undermining of the collective bargaining with Ports of Auckland Limited, which were to be heard at the Employment Court from 17 November 2014.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is hoping for resolution of the issue involving the Ukrainian crewmembers of the Ocean Green vessel, which is unable to leave Indonesia.
Yevhen Perebyinis, the spokesman for the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced this at a news briefing.
According to Perebyinis, the company that operates the vessel stopped paying the salaries of the vessel's crewmembers (including 40 Ukrainians) at the end of July and interruptions in supplies of water, food, and fuel have also begun.
The vessel is currently awaiting repairs on the outer roads of the port of Bart (Indonesia).
"We are currently negotiating with the Indonesian side on this issue. So far, there is no concrete decision, but we are hoping to resolve the problematic issues," he said.
Perebyinis said that negotiations were being held with the owner of the vessel, the company that operates the vessel, the company that chartered the vessel, and the Indonesian port authorities with the participation of the diplomatic institutions of Britain, Indonesia, Singapore, and Japan.
In addition, the incident has been reported to Panama (the vessel flies the flag of Panama), and representatives of the International Transport Workers' Federation have been involved in the case.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Tuticorin Judicial Magistrate Court (Tamil Nadu, India) released two Ukrainian crewmembers of the American vessel, the Seaman Guard Ohio, in April.
